In October 1939, the German occupiers forced the Jewish family to move into a ghetto. His mother was deported to the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp in 1944; the SS sent him, his brother, and his father to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp in late 1944, where his father died.

In January 1945, the SS transferred Feliks Milsztajn and other children to the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. The camp was liberated on 15 April 1945. Later, he learned that his mother had also been deported to Bergen-Belsen. She died shortly after the liberation, without the two of them having seen each other again.

In May 1945, the 12-year-old was able to have his 9-year-old brother, who had been left behind in Buchenwald, brought to Bergen-Belsen. A short time later, the two were sent to a children’s home in Sweden before leaving for Israel in 1948. There, Feliks changed his name to Shraga Milstein and became a teacher and the director of the Massuah Institute for Holocaust Studies. Since 2019, he has been the chair of the advisory board of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/12″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”3″ top_padding=”3″ bottom_padding=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ el_class=”postflow”][vc_column width=”3/12″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”4/12″][vc_single_image media=”1752″ media_lightbox=”yes” media_width_percent=”100″ lbox_caption=”yes”][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/12″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h4″ text_size=”h4″ text_height=”” uncode_shortcode_id=”194851″]Feliks Milsztajn (now Shraga Milstein) with his parents and younger brother Markus (left), before 1939.[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”144330″]Feliks Milsztajn was six years old when the Wehrmacht (German armed forces) invaded Poland and World War II began.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”841422″](private property)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/12″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”3″ top_padding=”3″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ inverted_device_order=”yes” el_class=”postflow wechsel”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner row_inner_height_percent=”0″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”4/12″ el_class=”smallcolumn” css=”.vc_custom_1616344869034{padding-left: 7em !important;}”][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h4″ text_size=”h4″ text_height=”” uncode_shortcode_id=”646789″]Buchenwald Concentration Camp prisoner registration file for Feliks Milsztajn (today Shraga Milstein), 2 December 1944.[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”160322″]One month later, the SS transferred Feliks to Bergen-Belsen.
